Can you provide more information about your academic background?
I completed my studies in Politics and International Relations. My decision to pursue this field was inspired by my participation in a exchange program on leadership and international relations. This transformative month-long program introduced me to the complexities of international relations, sparking a deep interest in the subject. Growing up in a household where politics was rarely discussed, I was eager to explore this area further, ultimately aspiring to contribute to my community and assist my people in meaningful ways.
How did your participation in the Erasmus exchange program impact your perspective on cultural diversity and academic inclusivity?
During my Bachelor’s Degree, I took the opportunity to participate in an Erasmus exchange, facilitated through my university’s partnership with Sciences Po University in Paris. This experience was truly transformative, especially given the cultural diversity. Coming from a university where students are typically segregated by major, the inclusive classroom environments in Paris were enlightening. Experiencing different academic disciplines firsthand was a unique highlight of the Erasmus program.
How would you describe the cultural transition you experienced while studying in Paris, coming from a different context?
The cultural shift was profound. Coming from the Kurdistan region of Iraq, known for its conservative values due to the predominant Muslim population, I found a stark contrast in Paris. Additionally, unlike the system back home, the diverse mix of students in Paris broadened my perspective. My time in Europe, particularly in Paris, presented both positive and challenging experiences, contributing significantly to my personal and academic growth.
How have the challenging conditions in the Kurdistan region influenced the growth and sustainability of arts and culture initiatives?
The cultural landscape in the Kurdistan region is evolving amidst challenging political and economic circumstances. Despite these difficulties, there has been significant investment in arts and culture, with initiatives supporting emerging artists and filmmakers. However, recent economic hardships have impacted the sustainability of these efforts. Visual arts, music, and filmmaking are thriving fields, and some Kurdish filmmakers have gained international recognition despite the challenges.
Given the current political climate in your region, could you share with us your experience working for the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region?
My internship at the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region was a significant learning opportunity. While primarily administrative, involving tasks like translation and reporting, it offered invaluable insight into government operations. This internship ultimately led to a full-time position, where I have been working for almost two years, contributing to my professional growth and understanding of governance.
After your time in Paris, what motivated your decision to relocate to Barcelona?
After completing my Erasmus exchange and gaining further academic and professional experience back home, I decided to pursue a Master’s in Cultural Management in Barcelona. My interest in this field was sparked by my bachelor’s thesis, which explored the intersection of culture and politics. Eager to deepen my understanding of how cultural institutions can influence politics, I chose this program. Barcelona’s rich cultural heritage and my affinity for the Spanish language and culture made it an ideal location for this academic pursuit.
How do you anticipate that obtaining a Master’s Degree in Arts and Cultural Management will help you achieve your personal aspirations and professional goals?
My pursuit of a Master’s in Cultural Management is integral to my ambition of promoting cultural diplomacy. Leveraging my background in politics and cultural studies, I aspire to pursue a career in cultural diplomacy or related fields, utilizing culture as a powerful tool for international impact and understanding.
